Drowning is the second leading cause of preventable death through 15 years old. Here are a few simple ways to reduce the risk of drowning:
-Don’t have your child swim unsupervised.
-Educate yourself on CPR and rescue techniques.
-If they get stuck in a current, teach them to stay composed and float with it; also, have them swim parallel to the shore.
-Match the swimming environment with their swim abilities. If they have only ever swum in a controlled setting like a pool, be cautious when taking them to a lake, ocean or river; it takes a different type of skill set to handle currents.
-Don’t allow your children to play around suction fittings or drains.
-Make sure there is a first aid kit nearby and you have a written list of emergency contacts.
